The number of migrants and refugees arriving in Australia has increased by 60 per cent in the past ten years, and nearly one in four of Australia’s 20 million people were born overseas, new figures show this week.

Releasing the figures for 2003-04, Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said that more than 111,000 people arrived and settled in Australia in the period, a rise of almost 20,000 on the previous year.

Most of the migrants came from the United Kingdom, followed by New Zealand, China, India, South Africa, the Sudan and the Philippines
